Actually, aircrafts are to a great extent made out of aluminum which is a good conductor. Thats why the charge is simply conducted around the aircraft without damaging it. Good thing they aren't made out of wood, that would be a whole other story:) I do believe they take the planes in for overhauling though. At least that's what Scandinavian Arlines did this summer at Arlanda airport in Stockholm, where two of their departing aircrafts were hit by lightning within 15 minutes apart.
wainerkorvenNo, the planes are usually delayed during thunderstorms but not because of lightning, but because of high winds associated with thunderstorms, such as downbursts which can make a plane crash.
